The Master of Social Work from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is a distance program. It is offered by IGNOU’s School of Social Work department in a hybrid mode, a mix of online and offline learning curriculum. With 4, six-month semester-wise curricula, the total duration of the course is 24 months.

Duration of IGNOU Distance Master of Social Work

The IGNOU Master of Social Work (MSW) degree has a total duration of 2 years, consisting of two yearly curricula. As per UGC’s norms, students are allowed to extend the program duration to 4 years if they suffer from medical/personal issues or any other unavoidable circumstances.

IGNOU follows a simple admission process with two admission cycles: January & June for its distance courses. Applicants looking to pursue the respective management course need to follow these steps

Step 1: Registration:

• Register using basic details
• Create/link APAAR & ABC ID
• Verify email and mobile number
• Create a user ID

Step 2: Admission Form:

• Log in using your user ID
• Choose your preferred program (MSW-ODL)
• Fill in personal, academic, and other required details

Step 3: Upload Documents:

You need to upload the following documents:

• Aadhar, PAN
• 10th, 12th, and bachelor marksheet
• Scanned photos & signature
• Domicile, Caste, Income, & PwD for reserved categories

Step 4: Payment:

• Pay your semester 1 fee
• You can choose Netbanking, UPI, Credit/Debit Card, and Bank Transfer for IGNOU fee payment.

The IGNOU ODL’s Master of Social Work (MSW) follows a year-wise curriculum. With a total of 72 credits, the program consists of 40 theory credits and 32 practical credits. This program helps students acquire core skills in social work, field research, project management, conflict resolution, and sustainable development. The program mainly focuses on practical fieldwork in cooperation with NGOs and government-based welfare departments to create policies for walfare of society.

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) offers multiple scholarship schemes for meritorious students, PwD, EWS, women, and jail inmates. Candidates pursuing the IGNOU Master of Social Work (MSW) can avail of these fee waivers by registering themselves on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).

Additionally, IGNOU also provide 15% fee waiver for students who opt for softcopy books for their respective ODL course, instead of physical books.

Students pursuing the Master of Social Work from IGNOU models are allowed to have 24/7 access to recorded lectures, audio podcasts, e-books, and other case studies at their own pace. It’s a comprehensive LMS that utilizes multiple channels, including Gyandarshan, Gyandhara, and Gyanvani, to provide study materials and related resources.

IGNOU also provides the option to download e-books, previous years' questions, assignments, and case studies related to the noble cause of social work, contextual and historical references through e-Gyankosh, and the e-content app.

Students also have the provision to access a wide network of IGNOU Libraries across India and abroad to utilize study materials, books, journals, and case studies, along with contextual and intellectual guidance.

Indira Gandhi Open National University conducts regular assessments, fieldwork, and yearly term-end examinations to evaluate its learners. The patterns of IGNOU MSW exams are as follows:

• Continuous Assessments are conducted in March for the June session and September for the December Session. It consists of viva, quizzes, and subjective questions with a 30% weightage. Students need to submit their respective assignments to the coordinator of their study center.
• Term-end Examinations carry 70% weightage and consist of theory papers with short and long-type questions. It is conducted during June and December every year. Students need to visit the physical center to attend their TEE.
• Social Work Practicum covers 16 credits, and students need to submit a project to confirm their eligibility in TEE. It consists of case studies, fieldwork, and group projects on any ongoing conflicts and their resolution.

Indira Gandhi Open University concludes internship programs and compulsory fieldwork within the MSW curriculum to help students gain practical knowledge. They also collaborate with multiple NGO, the Ministry of Women and Children Development (MoWCD), and international organisations to help students pursue the noble cause.

While the salary package may be on the lower side, ranging from ₹2 to 4 LPA, the IGNOU MSW helps students pursue the noble pursuit of societal welfare and upliftment. They can pursue roles as social workers, paramedics, community development officers, and NGO partners as per their preference.
