An Income Tax Officer (ITO) is responsible for assessing, collecting, and investigating the taxes paid by individuals and businesses. He/she ensures that tax compliance has been properly implemented and the returns are filed as per the norms of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). An ITO is a Group 'B' Gazetted officer in the Income Tax Department.

ITOs after the SSC CGL exam in India receive a monthly in-hand salary of approx. ₹58,956 to ₹75,000+, with a basic pay of ₹44,900.

An Income Tax Officer assesses tax returns, issues notices to defaulters, conducts surveys and raids, reviews audit reports, processes refund claims, and ensures taxpayer compliance under the Income Tax Act.

The age limit to become an ITO via SSC CGL is 18–27 years for the general category. OBC candidates get 3 years relaxation (up to 30 years), SC/ST candidates get 5 years relaxation (up to 32 years), and PwD candidates get up to 10 years additional relaxation.

You need to crack the SSC CGL exam to become an ITO, and for that, the minimum qualification is a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university. There is no minimum percentage requirement for SSC CGL eligibility.

You can become an ITO primarily through SSC CGL (Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level) for Group B posts, or through UPSC Civil Services Examination for IRS (Indian Revenue Service) Group A posts, which is a more senior-level entry.

Both are good at their own levels. SSC CGL is a way to make an entry into the Income Tax Department at a faster rate as a Group B officer. However, UPSC gives you the Group A designation and posts you at a higher rank, which is a long-term benefit.

There are two stages in the SSC CGL exam, one is Prelims and the other one is Mains. Both of these are computer-based tests. After passing these 2 stages, you will undergo document verification and medical examination for final selection.

To become an ITO, it is best if you opt for an online bachelor’s degree. It will save you both time and money, and will still be valid for your SSC CGL exams with its UGC-DEB approval.

It goes like Income Tax Officer to Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax (ACIT) to Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax (DCIT) to Joint Commissioner of Income Tax (JCIT) to Additional Commissioner of Income Tax (ADCIT) to Commissioner of Income Tax.

Yes, definitely! More than good, it is a respectable career in India. Being a government job, it is even seen as a secure career path in India.

To be an efficient ITO, you should have strong analytical, communication, and critical thinking skills. Along with that understanding of tax laws, accounting, and financial regulations would also help you a lot in your career journey.

At first, understand the pattern and format of the SSC CGL exam or the UPSC exam, whichever you are targeting for an ITO. After that, start collecting the learning resources and prepare a routine to cover high-score topics first. Do give your time to previous years' questions, which will help you boost speed and accuracy.

No, you need a bachelor’s degree to become an ITO. However, you can start your preparation for it immediately after the 12th grade by getting into an online bachelor’s degree program. This will give you more time to focus on your long-term goal.

Yes, you can become an ITO after completing an online bachelor’s degree, like online BCom, online BA, and online BBA from a UGC-approved university.

EdTech Content Lead (8+ Years Experience)

A research-driven writer with an unpredictable career journey! From a Content Writing Intern at an MNC to a Content Team Lead, my eight-year journey has been anything but linear — and that's precisely what makes it credible.

I started with the fundamentals: high-volume writing, SEO, and translating complex briefs into narratives that actually get read. Over the years, freelance consulting, senior writing roles, and cross-functional collaborations sharpened my understanding of brand voice, audience behaviour, and content strategy.

Not every role was a step up. Some were pivots. Each one taught me something about what good editorial leadership should — and shouldn't — look like.

What stayed constant was a belief: content should build understanding, not just traffic. That belief fits naturally in edtech, where every piece of content has the potential to genuinely change how someone learns or decides.

Today, as a Content Team Lead, I work at the intersection of strategy, storytelling, and people development — helping teams move from producing content to building systems that consistently deliver value to learners.

Eight years. Multiple industries. One conviction — well-crafted content, in the right hands, can educate as powerfully as any classroom.
